The 12th Battle of the Bison was anything but, as the Bison of Howard opened up a can on the Bison of Gallaudet (2-19) 96-38.
Gallaudet enjoyed brief lead at 2-0 off Shannon Cotto’s short jumper in the lane for the first points of the game and then at 4-2 when Corey Smith converted a layup. They would not lead for the rest of the game and once Howard tied it at 4 apiece shortly thereafter, the closest Gallaudet would ever be is down one, that coming on the first of a pair of Steve Settle free throws.
Howard stretched its lead to double figures on a pair of Tai Bibbs free throws with 6:30 to go in the first half and the Bison would draw no closer, as they would stare down a 22-point deficit at 39-17 heading into halftime.
Howard would pour it on even more in the second half leading by as much as 61 points, before taking the foot off the gas to win by 58 points.
Sophomore Jordan Woods scored a career-high 18 points , to go along with eight rebounds and three assists. Bryce Harris chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds, with MEAC Player of the Week contributing 10 points.
All 11 Howard players got in the scoring column, led by Steve Settle III, who had 21 points on 9-11 from the floor.
Howard head basketball coach Kenneth Blakeney said this after the game:
“It was really good to see guys contribute off the bench. I was more impressed with us defending. That’s what I really wanted to see, along with share the ball and rebound. That’s how I want to see us play.”…..This game was an opportunity to test our mental more than physical. After playing a very challenging opponent last night at Delaware State, we didn’t get back until after midnight. I knew we were going to be tested mentally and our guys responded.”
The win not only puts Howard above water at (11-10) on the season but also extends its winning streak to three games.
